Question

If an individual has a lesion on the brain that damages cranial nerve I, which of the following senses will be impacted?

Laravel · Accepted Answer

C Rationale: Damage to cranial nerve I directly impairs the sense of smell, as this nerve is responsible for olfactory function.

Sight, touch, and taste are associated with different cranial nerves: sight is linked to cranial nerve II, touch primarily involves the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V), and taste is mediated by cranial nerves VII, IX, and X. Therefore, these senses remain unaffected when cranial nerve I is damaged. The olfactory nerve is specifically tasked with transmitting smell signals from the nasal cavity to the brain, making it the only sense impacted by an injury to this nerve.
