What charge do Group VIA elements typically have?

Question

Laravel · Accepted Answer

B Rationale: Group VIA elements typically have a charge of -2 due to their tendency to gain two electrons to achieve a stable octet.

Option A suggests a charge of -1, which does not align with the common valence state of these elements, as they require two additional electrons for stability. Option C indicates a charge of -3, which is characteristic of Group VA elements, not Group VIA, where gaining two electrons is the norm. Option D implies a neutral charge, which is not typically seen in these elements, as they actively seek to gain electrons rather than remain uncharged.
